Firefox 3.0 Beta 1

firefoxI think it’s almost 3 days since I’ve downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox, which is still in development. But even if this version is still in Beta, I was really enchanted to see another great product full of nice and neat features. One of the best feature is the one click “bookmark this page” star icon in the location bar, similar to what Flock and IE7 has. But even if it’s the best one (from my point) i have to admit that I don’t like it that much because you still have to manage your bookmarks from time to time or else you will get a looong list of messed up links. So for this one I still prefer the Google Bookmarks extension for Firefox.
There aren’t too many visual changes, but some specifications say that the new browser is equipped with Gecko 1.9 Web rendering platform and it has a number of enhanced security features such as integration with anti-virus packages, sand-boxing of suspected web forgery pages and, for Vista users, integration with that operating systems parental control settings for disabling downloads.
Other features worth mentioning are:
Places which actually tracks web surfing trends similarly to how various media players track music listening trends
Lower Memory Utilization - this one is great for those who don’t have to much available memory, just like me :)
One Click Website Info - a little icon in the address bar which tells you some usefully informations about the website you’re visiting
Taging and Easier Bookmarking - I mentioned some stuff about this one above
….and so many other.

So, whatever you are a Firefox fan or not, you can Download Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 here.

Happy Birtday Firefox

Three years ago in this day, Mozilla rolled out the most beautiful and popular Internet Browser, and for more than 2 years, it is my favorite browser. It suits perfectly to my needs and looking at the way things are looking in Browsers area, I will never go back to another browser, especially IE (yac).

Anyway, here’s a little history taken from wikipedia:

Blake Ross began working on the Firefox project as an experimental branch of the Mozilla project. They believed the commercial requirements of Netscape’s sponsorship and developer-driven feature creep compromised the utility of the Mozilla browser. To combat what they saw as the Mozilla Suite’s software bloat, they created a pared-down browser, with which they intended to replace the Mozilla Suite. On April 3, 2003, the Mozilla Organization announced that they planned to change their focus from the Mozilla Suite to Firefox and Thunderbird.
The Firefox project has undergone several name changes. Originally titled Phoenix, it was renamed because of trademark issues with Phoenix Technologies. The replacement name, Firebird, provoked an intense response from the Firebird free database software project. In response, the Mozilla Foundation stated that the browser should always bear the name Mozilla Firebird to avoid confusion with the database software. Continuing pressure from the database server’s development community forced another change; on February 9, 2004, Mozilla Firebird became Mozilla Firefox (Firefox for short).
The Firefox project went through many versions before 1.0 was released on November 9, 2004. In addition to stability and security fixes, the Mozilla Foundation released its first major update to Firefox version 1.5 on November 29, 2005. On October 24, 2006, Mozilla released Firefox 2. This version includes updates to the tabbed browsing environment, the extensions manager, the GUI, and the find, search and software update engines; a new session restore feature; inline spell checking; and an anti-phishing feature which was implemented by Google as an extension and later merged into the program itself.

So, once again, Happy Birthday Firefox .

Happy Birthday Meebo

I’m a little bit late with this one, but seems like this Monday, the best and most cute web messenger from this planet, Meebo that is, just got bigger and older :). It’s been 2 (two) years since I started to use Meebo and I’m happy to say that even if I didn’t use it with regularity, I was amazed by every step made to be better and better. And now I’m more happy to report that the excellent team behind all this gave us a much requested feature: Voice and video chat. Applauses ladies and gentleman’s! They deserve it. But that’s not all, because meebo is opening up its doors to developers so they can create many many multi-user applications that meebo users can use to connect to their friends. Visit Meebo Platform if you are interested of meebo platform API, or to obtain a unique key and get access to a starter kit.
More cool features and neat info, at meebo’s blog.

Way to go Meebo and, happy Birthday again.

The Internet might run out at the enf of 2010

Well folks, seems like that’s it for some of us, the casual Internet user, and all that because of actual IPv4 (Internet Prorocol version 4) system. Every computer connected to the interesting has an unique IP address, a sort of a number. Because of the IPv4 which can hold “only” around 4 billions of addresses (IP’s) and because of the increasing number of Internet users, we might run out of……numbers :). When the limits of the IPv4 system will be reached, other users will not be able to “get on line”, so it is about time that the new system, IPv6 (developed 10 years ago) to be launched as soon as possible to avoid this. IPv6 will be able to sustain enough IP’s so that we can surf without any problems for a looooong time. The thing is that the computers, the servers, the routers and so on are compatible with IPv6, but so far the ISP’s didn’t implemented yet. How much longer will they wait?
